Gorbachev came to power, the Lakers won the MBA championship and Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was on the top of the charts. This was the year that Cliff and Donald got together on the film set of F/X. Read the story as it was told to Lisa Hendrickson in 2015.
The film business has given birth to innumerable chance encounters of singularly-talented individuals, so the 1985 meeting of theatrical scenic artists Cliff Schorr and Donald Southern on the NYC set of the film F/X is not all that unusual. What is unusual is that that meeting led to the development of Mr. Schorr’s new idea for a new category of wall art— beautiful hand-painted textile wall coverings that don’t require seams. These wall coverings are applied in wall-size pieces which have no patterns to match—and no top, bottom, left, or right. Use of Sfumatura thus represents an ease of application that results in instantaneous transformation of the environment into an elegant, one-of-a-kind, stunning contemporary look and feel.
Over the past 25 years, Messrs. Schorr and Southern’s working relationship has inspired them to create innumerable luminous, hand-painted, richly-textured, and gorgeous wall coverings. These custom works of Sfumatura grace the walls of luxury residential and commercial projects on the East and West Coasts of the US and the resort settings of Mexico.
In 2013 the two artists allied themselves with Jeanne Golly, understanding that their creativity and sales skills would greatly benefit from the strategic support of her broad executive experience in managing the corporate marketing, advertising, and communications departments of a handful of notable multinational companies. Jeanne directs business affairs for the company. Today Sfumatura is vital and filled with color and energy as well as a deep desire to serve as a life-enriching force for all.
